Grandparents Are Losing Their Real Appeal

We were back  in my hometown, Ipoh, last weekend, where both my parents and my hubby's parents live. We try to make an effort to go back at least once a month so that we can catch up with our parents and they with their grandkids. This recent trip has made me realise that the grandparents are slowly losing their real appeal. And what I mean by 'real appeal' is that special charm and attraction that makes the kids want to be with them for being just who they are - older parents who pamper them, play and spend quality time with them. What has stolen this 'real appeal' from the grandparents, you ask? The iPad, the Wii and the T.V.

My kids get to watch unlimited hours of Playhouse Disney, or whatever you call it now, over at my hubby's parents' place. They have tonnes of DVDs to watch over at my Dad's.

My Dad whips out the iPad the moment he sees his grandson. The Wii is a 2nd alternative. The T.V. is switched on after too many hours of iPad and Wii playing. Sometimes, it is turned on the whole time.

It's all done in the name of love. The kind of love that wants to make their grandkids happy all the time. The kind of love that never wants to see them throw a tantrum over not being able to play Angry Birds or watch the T.V.. The kind of love that says "they are not always here, let them do what they want".

But what kind of message is this sending out to the kids?

My son, on the day we were about to head home to the city, asked me in the morning..

"Mommy, are we going to Grandpa's house?"
"No, boy, we won't have time to go to Grandpa's because we have to leave after breakfast"
"But, Mommy, I just want to see Grandpa for a little while" (read I want to have a last rendezvous with the iPad)
"I'm sorry but we're not going over. We'll be meeting Grandpa for breakfast"
"But Mommy, I want to say Goodbye to Grandpa" (read I want to swipe my little finger across the iPad one last time before I say Goodbye to it for another month)

And when I insisted that we couldn't go over, he was all ready to give me a PITA session.

A mother knows her son. That was not the first time he'd expressed such a longing to "see and say goodbye to Grandpa" only to ask about the wellbeing of the iPad upon arrival at his beloved Grandpa's house. I feel a little sad. I don't want my kids to see their grandparents' place as a no-holds-barred-T.V.-and-computer-game-playing entertainment centre. I want them to remember the times spent with their grandparents as those that involved interaction, sharing and making stories together, reading books together, playing and having fun with each other. I am not saying they don't play with their grandkids at all, they do. I see my mother-in-law and my mom making the effort to play with them often. But I am also seeing the emergence of the iPad, Wii and T.V. as the preferred playmates and entertainers over their grandparents. At this rate, very soon, the kids will associate Ipoh to Playhouse Disney, iPad, Wii and Movies; not Grandpa, Grandmi, Yeh Yeh and Mama.

Just like how I always remind myself that the kids grow up too fast and that I shouldn't miss out on these precious times, I want my parents to be reminded of the same. I want them to be reminded that they don't often get to see them and when they do, to seize that moment with them and leave a lasting memory of wonderful times spent together...

For the chance to play with them when they are at this age,

will be gone too soon.

Life's Lessons - The Sick Family Edition

You might want to wear a mask before reading this.

Linking up with the lovely ladies behind Life's Lessons, Rach and Sara to note down what a sickly week I had this week

Life With Baby Donut

1. For the past few days, my throat has been so sore I was ready to cut it out with one of the knives my mom gave me.

2. Only problem is, I don't know which one to use.

3. I had a headache 3 days in row and was pretty sure mincing knife was the one to use to chop my head off and stop the pain.

4. But thankfully a few tablets of paracetamol did the trick.

5. My head is safe.

6. I realise now that I often get sick because of my kids and there is just no way of stopping the virus from spreading around family members living in the same home.

7. No matter how careful you are about sharing stuff.

8. So this awful bug's been having a whale of a time here, hopping from my son, to me, then to my husband and now my little girl.

9. On top of that, my boy was scratching himself the whole day yesterday and had patches of rash all over his body. The poor boy was so disturbed by it that we finally decided to take him to the doctor's.

10. I had earlier expected Chicken Pox because one of his classmates just got it; but the doctor said it was post-viral urticaria.

11. Oh yes, now we're all coughing.

12. You wouldn't want to be anywhere near us at this time.

13. As an extra precaution, please wash your hands after reading this.

Here's wishing y'all a great weekend
and a virus-free week ahead!

Life's Lessons - Itchy Fingers Edition

I thought I'd do a summary of how my week went with Rach and Sara's linky, Life's Lessons.

1. I've got itchy fingers again.

2. When the fingers itch, I get me a new blog design. (tips from Sneaky Momma's Blog Design and Clover Lane)

3. I have to ask - why is everyone moving over to Wordpress?! Is Blogger really that bad? I told Alison before that I'm in my comfort zone now and probably will never move my blog butt anywhere but now I am seriously reconsidering. I mean, since I'm relatively new to blogging, it's better to move now than later, right?

4. So, my itchy fingers have opened me a new account over at Wordpress just to check out what the hype is about Mr WP over there.

5. I can't function well without enough sleep. I don't know how Kimberly and Stasha do it, staying up till the wee hours of morning, still tweeting and blogging, but I can't. Yesterday I got up at 3am thinking it was 6am and didn't sleep till 11pm.

6. So I tweeted and did my first #FF.

7. After that I had to take my son for his Sports Day the whole morning..

8. On top of that I had a little sparkling wine after lunch. I felt like I was floating in Lalaland the whole afternoon. I almost came down with a flu after that and was totally bummed out by 11pm last night. I. Need. To. Sleep

9.  My boy went for his first dental visit this week. Dentist told me he inherited teeth grinding habit from me. Also that he has a slight squint on his left eye and I should get it checked and corrected. Okaayy...

10. This is my 200th post!

11. Had lots of durians over the week.

12. Received another durian from a kind neighbour again today - Yippee!

13.  Excuse me but my fingers are itching for some more durians now. Got to go!

Hope y'all have a good week ahead!

Life in a Week

I'm linking up with the wonderful Rach of Life With Baby Donut  and Sara of Life's Recipe for..

Go ahead and link up your post about your life's lessons.

So here's how my week went....

1. My girl pooped twice and pee-ed once in the potty. And all I did was watch for the signs, asked her if she would sit down on her potty and let her lead the way. Didn't have to force her at all. I've been rather lazy busy to really get down to potty training her like how I did with my boy. So I'm really glad it's turned out well, so far.

2. Started baking again - brownies and Alison's yummy banana loaf; all in one day. It's been ages since I last baked anything.

3. This is the first time I actually allowed my son to help me bake. It's a great way to get him to like what I bake. He was really excited and enjoyed the experience very much.

4. Made some new bloggy friends and found some really cool linkies.

5. Had lots of giggles with the kids, especially before bedtime. Wonderful bonding time with my family.

6. My girl's talking a lot more now and loves to ask me "Mami, wha u dooing?" especially when I'm on the computer blogging. And when I tell her "Mommy's blogging" she asks "Waaaiiii?" and I'm lost for words.

7. I discovered that I have a sixth sense - I can tell you when the weather will be cloudy and hot at the same time, followed by pouring rain. How? I get a THROBBING HEADACHE. It has happened many times and I'm starting to believe it to be my sixth sense.

There you have it, as boring as it sounds, that's my life for you this week. Go share your exciting life with Rach and Sara!

Being a Single Parent

Boy, it's been a stressful and tiring few days (77 hours to be exact). My hubby was away for work and I was left with being a single parent to my 2 kids. Both my mother and mother-in-law were unable to come to my aid due to their own busy schedule, so this is the first time that I've been left alone with the kids. I've come out of this experience with the realisation that...

1. Being a single parent is TOUGH. Emotionally, psychologically and physically. I have a new found respect for single parents. It's tough being the only adult responsible for 2 little helpless creatures who morph into monsters every now and then. It’s tough being the only adult to satisfy the whims and fancies of 2 demanding kids. It’s tough not having someone to fill in for you when you need a break.

2. The first 24 hours is always the toughest. Everyone misses daddy and I miss someone to help me watch the kids while I bathe or cook.

3. Having patience is not enough. You need a special form of Local Anesthesia to numb you of all the yelling, crying, fussing, whining and complaining. Can somebody invent this please?!

4. How important a little me-time is to keep sane. Even if it's just a 5-minute shower break.

5. I can get UGLY. Especially when I have a fickle, fussy 21-month-old girl who doesn't seem to be satisfied with anything I give her or do for her. Especially after having to clean poop off her bum 5 times in a day (she has this habit of holding it in and letting it out bit by bit, which drives me CRAZY). Especially when she wouldn't stop crying and yelling in the car for a whole 30 minutes. Especially when she's been crying All. Day. Long. Especially when I need to repeat myself at least 5 times to get the kids to clear up their mess. And what I mean by ugly, besides looking ugly, is screaming at my kids for real (not just in my head), smacking them and yelling "shut up" at my girl for the first time. All of which I'm feeling darn guilty for doing.

6. My left eye twitches when I’m super stressed.

7. Having a healthy, living mom and a mom-in-law to answer distress calls is a true blessing.

8. I'm tougher than I thought I was. The task of having to care for my kids all by myself has always seemed daunting to me and I'd freak out at the thought of it. If I'd have to do it again, I think I probably would be able to make it through a whole week (baby steps) without help.

9. I need my Hubby around to be a father to my kids and a supportive husband to me. Yes I do, for better for worse, in sickness and in health, for richer and richer still, to love and to cherish, till NEVER will we part.

I'm SO glad you're home, dear.
