The Bible

The Word of God.

And...

I don't read it. I'm reading the word of blogs now more than anything.

I'm happy to report that my mind did not wander off as much as it did last sunday. The only thought that would probably require a confession was "What should I blog about this week?"

So, back to the Bible. Today, Father talked about how Catholics are not as connected to the Bible as our Protestant friends are. Which I believe is so true. I've tried to read the Bible many times (does 3 count as many?) I even bought a manual on how to read the Bible but alas, I've yet to actually READ the Bible. Honestly, I find the Bible boring, confusing and mind boggling, especially the Old Testament. How can someone live to a few hundred years of age? Where do the dinosaurs come in? Were Adam and Eve cavemen/neanderthals? How do you fit the theory of evolution into the context of the Bible? In fact, the theory of evolution makes more sense to me. I'd read just one verse of the Bible and my eyes would start to see double images of everything.

But Father's homily today got me thinking about the Bible. It's time to get connected with my God again through the Bible. Maybe this time, I should read with my heart rather than my head.

Now, where did I put that Bible of mine...

So, I see you're reading the word of blogs when you should be going to church huh?

For many many years I felt the same way. Maybe as a preacher's kid, I had a lot of head knowledge and no heart experience. I think you're onto it - listening with your heart. I think the stuff in the Bible is of such depth that we will never understand it all; but I do know that when I come with my heart, God does open my eyes to some of His truths nearly every time I read it. Thanks for the visit to my Rock4Today! Blessings as you read!
I think I stopped at Psalms... which was like a few years back, since then ermm... busy with other things than reading the word of God! But then, I try making up for it by reading other Christian books (which thank God, has lots of bible verses to read with) and I find it easier to relate and understand the bible verses when it was accompanied with real life stories from people around the world.

That's actually a great way of getting started - reading Christian books. Yes I probably should do that or I'd still be stuck at the first page of Genesis. Thanks for sharing this.
hey there...I agree with you that the Bible is a difficult book to read. however..do start with the new testament. I like the books from Galatians up to colossians..so much in there to help. I even read it to my kids, coz it has so much to teach about good character. I guess..the Bible will become "alive" when you start reading with your heart..an even pray a simple prayer to ask God to help youunderstand.

Thanks Martha. I will check on Galatians and Colossians. Yes, reading to my kids would be great to get us all started on reading the Bible.
I agree with Martha, the New Testament is much easier to get through...and honestly, I enjoy reading my children's bibles with them, it's easier for them to understand and for me too! ha!
my church offers a bible study using the one year Bible...apparently it makes going through the Bible more manageable...

Yes, I should actually start with a children's bible - why didn't I think of that?! The most elementary level..haha! Thanks Holly!
The Bible is the word of God, written by man...and interpreted by man...and many have twisted the word in more ways than one. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe...it all boils down to faith, hope and charity...and love. They will know we are Christians by these - not how well we know the bible. I do know it well as I studied it in school...since Primary and my daughter grew up on the children's bible. There are some very good ones.

Ya I've often thought that about the Bible but still would like to get to know more about the word of God through the Bible; although essentially I strive to live a Christian life. Or maybe my faith isn't strong, that's why I have all these questions in my head about the Bible.

Thanks! I will try that.
Personally, I find it quite interesting. I mean....it's got everything really - in epic proportions. A naked couple in a beautiful garden and a wiley snake intent on tempting them to their own destruction. Early on, there's a murder!! between brothers, no less. Then some other brothers SELL their own brother out of jealousy. A father almost kills his son on an altar. A bush burns, then talks. There's a couple of towns that get up to some pretty dirty fun - forget Vegas!! Oh, but they do go up in smoke though. There's battles, swordfights, Kings' letting their eyes wander to married women, a little boy bests a giant, some serious sexy prose (yep, start with Song of Solomon if you like), and there's some pretty strong, courageous and godly women too. Oh, and of course, that babe born in a lowly manger (they say his mom was Not married at the time he was conceived....bet that wagged some tongues), but went on to live a pretty amazing life. He dies though, sad. But for us though, yeah!
My dad made me read a few chapters every night. So, all told, I've gone cover to cover more than few times. But it still took until about the 3rd reading to start getting that it actually is very amazing, and historical book. Aside from the fact of being the Word of God! I say, read it for the enjoyment first.....understanding will follow.

Can you rewrite the Bible please?! Hahaha!!! Your comment here made me laugh. Well if the Bible was written like how you explained it here, I'd be reading it every night! Gosh you've read it a few times?! I couldn't even get through the first few pages of Genesis. You know what I'm gonna do now? I'm gonna read it like how Leslie Botchar would write it.
